IMPLEMENTATION OF SELECTIVE DOOR TO DOOR BIOWASTE COLLECTION IN THE CITY OF MILAN

On 26 November 2012 began door to door separate collection of organic waste in the city of Milan. The implantation was carried out at an early stage in the south-west, with a total of 313,000 people served, and gradually extended during 2013 to provide coverage for the entire city in 2014.

The city, located to the west of the Lombard region of Italy is the second largest city in population, with a total of 1.3 million and a population density of 6,800 inhabitants/km2.

During the implementation phase, held on 3 September 2012, were given kits to families with total distribution of 4,250,000 compostable bags, 170,000 brown bins aerated 10L 120L and 12,000 brown bins.

Separate collection in Milan in 2011 was of 35.9%, with the introduction of door to door collection is expected to increase the rate of recycling and the quantity and quality of the organic fraction recovered.

The first results of these months of implantation showed a high quality organic fraction obtained. The samples were placed between 2 and 2.5% the level of impurities, arriving in the study areas achieved an average 1.6%.
